Clinical relevance of pleural effusion in patients with pulmonary embolism.
Although retained not specific, the presence of pleural effusion may complicate and/or delay the diagnosis of acute PE. Moreover, data regarding the prognostic impact of pleural effusion in such patients have been poorly investigated by previous reports. We systematically reviewed the available information and performed a meta-analysis of data from the available cohort studies to estimate the prognostic role of pleural effusion and its related early mortality in patients diagnosed with acute PE.
