Previous investigations have frequently reported the presence of pleural effusion
in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE).

Although retained not specific, the presence of pleural effusion may complicate and/or
delay the diagnosis of acute PE. Moreover, data regarding the prognostic impact of
pleural effusion in such patients have been poorly investigated by previous reports.
We systematically reviewed the available information and performed a meta-analysis
of data from the available cohort studies to estimate the prognostic role of pleural
