Effect of surgical repair of secundum-type atrial septal defect on right atrial, right ventricular, and left ventricular volumes in adults

Echocardiography remains the best technique for diagnosing and evaluating the hemodynamic significance of an atrial septal defect (ASD). The characteristic echocardiographic features of ASD include pulmonary arterial, right ventricular (RV), and right atrial (RA) dilation with paradoxical or flat ventricular septal motion caused by volume overload.

Little is known about these echocardiographic features after repair of ASD in adult patients. This study assesses the above echocardiographic parameters after ASD repair in adult patients.
